HOW IT WORKS

Eutelsat's W7 satellite, in geostationary orbit, covers the whole of Western and Eastern Europe, the Mediterranean basin and the Middle East, as well as a large section of the Atlantic Ocean. It permanently transmits messages sent by the mobile terminals and the fleet operator's network management centre to their final destinations and indicates the position of the mobiles within 100 meters.

A central switching station near Paris receives the messages and requests from the fleet operator's network management centre either by satellite or via landlines. The messages and requests are then transmitted via satellite to the designated mobile unit(s). Return messages and position reports or mobile to mobile messages take the reverse route.

Communication between mobile and base are fully protected against unauthorised access as EutelTRACS™ is a fully secured, closed user group system.

CASE STUDY

Giraud International on the road with EutelTRACS

To stay ahead in the transport trade, Giraud International, an international freight business, has equipped vehicles with the EutelTRACS™ messaging and positioning system, supplied in Europe by Qualcomm and operating through Eutelsat capacity.

“Giraud International operates like a freight exchange with trucks and drivers tracked in real time. This allows us to anticipate incidents and be extremely proactive”, explains Fabrice de Biasio, Director of Information Systems for the group.

EutelTRACS enables trucks, trailers and freight to be tracked, and tracing of pallets and products. Giraud International selects, mobilises and monitors sub-contractors and its own network.

“We have equipped the entire fleet of 2400 engines and 3100 articulated trucks”, says Fabrice de Biasio. “By optimising vehicles and drivers we are raising productivity and competitiveness.”
