Built by EADS-Astrium, HOT BIRD 9 joins Eutelsat's 13 degrees East neighbourhood, serving Europe, North Africa and the Middle-East. This flagship position broadcasts over 1 100 television channels to over 120 million homes and is the Europe's prime orbital location in terms of channels broadcast.
HOT BIRD 9 will help further advance the development of digital and high-definition TV. As is the case of all Eutelsat's broadcasting satellites, viewers will be able to watch the HOT BIRD 9 TV channels via a simple receive-only dish. The satellite will also deliver channels to cable and DTT networks, and the add-on TV coverage needed for triple-play offers.
On the entry into service of HOT BIRD 9, HOT BIRD 7A was released from its original mission at 13 degrees East. The satellite has been rebranded EUROBIRD 9A and relocated to Eutelsat's new European broadcasting neighbourhood at 9 degrees East, increasing the number of operational transponders from 20 to 38.
