W4 :: 36° EAST
Located at 36 degrees East, W4 provides high-power coverage for Eastern
Europe and Africa for services including television, radio, multimedia
and Internet access.
19 channels provide high-power broadcast coverage from Central Europe
to Siberia. Several of these channels are currently used by some of
the largest direct-to-home digital TV packages in the CIS, such as NTV
Plus and Poverkhnost.
W4 also covers sub-Saharan Africa through a fixed coverage, as well
as Nigeria and neighbouring countries via a high-power spotbeam. Six
channels are connected to each of these beams. The satellite’s
design allows transmission from the steerable coverage to the African
coverage and vice versa, permitting, for example, simultaneous broadcasting
to both coverages.
Co-located with SESAT 1, W4 plays a key role in Africa’s video
neighbourhood at 36 degrees East, for TV packages such as Multichoice
Africa.
