Why has Eutelsat changed the names of its satellite? We have taken this decision for four principle reasons:
- to create a closer association with the Eutelsat name and our satellites; For example, with this new system W6 at 21.5° East has become EUTELSAT 21A. The future W6A satellite becomes EUTELSAT 21B. To ensure clarity, satellites at our four West positions include West in their name, Satellite renaming is a well established practice for Eutelsat. For example, HOT BIRD 2 was renamed EUROBIRD 9 when it was redeployed from 13° East to 9° East and was subsequently renamed W48 when redeployed to 48° East. In the future, this new satellite denomination system will clarify future satellite redeployments. |
Why are you retaining the HOT BIRD and KA-SAT brands? The HOT BIRD brand has a high reputation and has been successfully used over 20 years. It has therefore been retained but is more closely associated with the Eutelsat brand and follows the numbering system that we have adopted for all other satellites. For example, HOT BIRD 6 has become EUTELSAT HOT BIRD 13A. The KA-SAT name is associated with the new-generation Tooway product launched in May this year. The Group wishes to capitalise on the reputation of the KA-SAT programme.

What happens in case of change of orbital position for a satellite? The satellite name will change as it changes its orbital position. It will carry the orbital position and an incremental letter for that position.

What satellites are going to be launched next and what will their names be? 2012/Q4: EUTELSAT 21B (W6A) EUTELSAT 3B and EUTELSAT 9B, two new satellites recently ordered, follow the new naming scheme since the contract with the satellite manufacturer.
