HOT BIRD™ With a constellation of three high-power satellites, the HOT BIRD™ family at 13 degrees East forms one of the largest broadcasting systems in Europe, delivering nearly 1100 television channels to more than 123 million TV homes in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.

The HOT BIRD™ video neighbourhood hosts 13 premium platforms, over 500 pay-TV channels, over 500 free-to-air channels and almost 30 HDTV channels. In addition to broadcasting television services, the system provides over 500 radio stations, and multimedia services, over the same wide coverage area.

The HOT BIRD™ satellites provide full coverage of Europe and the Middle East, and also parts of Africa and Asia. This is the prime position in Europe for reception of consumer television and radio. Direct-To-Home reception in beam centre is possible with antennae smaller than 70 cm, and with slightly larger antennas, throughout Europe, North Africa and as far East as Moscow and Dubai.

On December 20, 2008, HOT BIRD™ 9 was launched from the European spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, by an Ariane 5 ECA rocket. The entry into service of HOT BIRD™ 9 released Eutelsat’s HOT BIRD™ 7A satellite from its original mission at 13° East, where it has been redeployed to Eutelsat’s new broadcasting position for Europe at 9° East and rebranded EUROBIRD™ 9A. HOT BIRD™ 9 joins HOT BIRD™ 8 to further bolster the inter-satellite sparing programme which will be completed with HOT BIRD™ 10 after the redeployment of HOT BIRD™ 6.
