NARROWBAND CONNECTIVITY FOR IOT

With the expansion of the Internet of Things (IoT), in sectors as diverse as transport, oil and gas, and agriculture, business-critical information from tens of millions of objects will need to be sent from areas that are not served by terrestrial networks.

Low Earth orbit (LEO) is particularly well-suited to this narrowband connectivity, processing signals emitted by connected objects. It offers a satellite link anywhere in the world, complementing low-power, wide-area wireless technology (LPWA) IoT terrestrial networks, without increasing the cost or energy consumption of the objects.

Eutelsat’s fleet of LEO satellites, called ELO (Eutelsat LEO for Objects), will offer global IoT coverage enabling objects to transmit data, irrespective of their location, demonstrating the fundamental complementarity between terrestrial networks and satellite technology.

ELO ALPHA

ELO Alpha is the first nanosatellite ordered by Eutelsat. It will be used to confirm the technical performance of various waveforms between a satellite in low Earth orbit and objects on the ground.

Satellite Manufacturer: Tyvak International

Size: 6U cubesat – 6 litres or 30cm x 20cm x 10cm before deployment of its solar panels

Coverage: Global

Launch: H1 2020

ELO 1 & ELO 2

The ELO 1 and ELO 2 payloads will be hosted on a satellite platform combining several missions. Some of these onboard missions, alongside ELO 1 and ELO 2, will be used for Earth observation and in-orbit demonstration.

Satellite manufacturer: Loft Orbital

Size: The host satellite platform measures 70cm x 70cm x 70cm and both ELO 1 and ELO 2’s maximum antenna dimension is 50cm.

Weight: The platform hosting Eutelsat’s payloads weighs 80kg. Both ELO 1 and ELO 2 payloads weigh 8kg.

Coverage: Global

Scheduled launch: 2020

ELO 3 & ELO 4

ELO 3 and ELO 4 are similar in volume to the original ELO Alpha.

Satellite manufacturer: Clyde Space

Size: 6U cubesat - 6 litres or 30cm x 20cm x 10cm before the deployment of its solar panels.

Weight: 12 kg.

Coverage: Global

Scheduled launch: 2021

PARTNERSHIP WITH SIGFOX

Sigfox integrates ELO in its hybrid IoT network

Leading IoT player Sigfox runs a unique global narrowband network across 65 countries.

Based on hybrid connected objects, where data is captured by both satellite and terrestrial networks, Sigfox will integrate the ELO satellites’ global coverage into its existing range of IoT connectivity services.

This enhanced network coverage will open the door to many new use cases in areas such as maritime transportation or logistics, and also the safety of people in emergency situations.
