Eutelsat optimises its multi-satellite neighbourhood at 36 degrees East to boost capacity for video broadcasting in Africa

Eutelsat, one of the world’s leading satellite operators, today announced the conclusion of a new agreement with MultiChoice Africa, for satellite capacity which will enable MultiChoice to expand its DStv pay-TV offering in sub-Saharan Africa.

Through capacity selected in 2000 by MultiChoice Africa on W4, Africa’s leading pay-TV operator has built a subscriber base of over 170,000 homes which can receive over 50 television and 30 radio programmes catering for English, Portuguese, Indian and French-speaking communities. In order to support the continued expansion of DStv, Eutelsat reconfigured its SESAT 1 satellite, which is copositioned with W4, so that subscribers can receive additional services through the same antenna.

Following the decision announced on December 13 by the French Council of State (Conseil d’Etat) to instruct Eutelsat to terminate transmissions in France of Al Manar in a multiplex operated by ARABSAT on Eutelsat’s HOT BIRD™ 4 satellite, Eutelsat has been formally notified by ARABSAT that Al Manar has itself voluntarily taken the decision to cease broadcasting on HOT BIRD™ 4.

Information has been circulating in the media over the past few days relating to fraudulent practices conducted over the Internet, where people are sent an invoice and encouraged to dial a telephone number that begins with the dialling code 00 88 213. Eutelsat’s name has sometimes been associated with this information under the pretext that Eutelsat is distributor of the “emsat” messaging service run by the Italian operator Telespazio and commercialised by Eutelsat for use by professional road-haulage and fishing-fleet customers in Europe.

Eutelsat wishes to clarify immediately and unequivocally that there is no link whatsoever between its business activities and the fraud being reported in the media.

Following Eutelsat’s strong financial performance over the 2003/2004 financial year, the agency is raising its credit rating on the company’s long-term debt to BBB+. S&P says the outlook for Eutelsat is stable, and the A-2 rating on short-term debt has been confirmed.

Giuliano Berretta elected Chairman and CEO

Russian Satellite Communications Company and Eutelsat sign a lifetime leasing contract for capacity on new Russian EXPRESS AM22 satellite

Eutelsat has signed a contract with the RSCC (Russian Satellite Communications Company) for lifetime lease of 12 Ku-band transponders on the RSCC’s Express AM22 satellite that was launched on 29 December 2003 and went into operation on 9 March at 53 degrees East in geostationary orbit. The contract was signed in Moscow on 16 March between Giuliano Berretta, Eutelsat CEO, and Yuri Ismaylov, Acting Director General of the RSCC.

W3A, Eutelsat’s largest satellite delivered to Baikonur Cosmodrome for March launch

Eutelsat today announced that construction of its W3A communications satellite is now complete and that the satellite will be delivered tomorrow by EADS Astrium to the Baikonur Cosmodrome. The satellite is scheduled for launch on March 16 by a Proton rocket supplied by International Launch Services. W3A will be positioned in orbit at 7 degrees East which is currently occupied by Eutelsat’s W3 satellite. In addition to enhancing the coverage of Europe provided through W3 and extending reach into sub-Saharan Africa, W3A will introduce innovative technologies to Eutelsat’s 7 degrees East location including Skyplex on-board processing and Ka-band frequencies.
