This new multi-year agreement will consolidate TDA’s TV and radio channels at the 7/8° West orbital position, the country’s leading video neighbourhood.

TDA currently broadcasts an extensive offer of some 26 free-to-air public and private television and radio channels in both standard and high definition. The 7/8° West orbital position is the leading satellite neighbourhood for audiences in Algeria, reaching 97% of satellite TV households, and the leading orbital position across the Middle East and North Africa. Offering broadcasters, the largest exclusive reach in the region, audiences prefer the 7/8° West video neighbourhood thanks to its unparalleled line-up of around 900 TV channels broadcasting from the 7/8° West orbital location.

Laurence Delpy, General Manager of the Video Business Unit, Eutelsat, commented: “TDA is a long-standing partner of Eutelsat. They were one of the first major broadcasting companies in the Arab world to entrust us with their television and radio channels, and we have been proud to support them in their broadcasting journey. Paris, 23 January 2024 – France Télévisions today announced that it will be broadcasting its France 2 channel in 4K-UHD (Ultra High Definition) from tomorrow via digital terrestrial television (DTT) and simultaneously on the FRANSAT free-to-air bouquet, a subsidiary of satellite operator Eutelsat Group. This will ensure extensive and immediate coverage of mainland France just a few months ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

France 2, first DTT channel to be aired in UHD

France Télévisions is the first French TV broadcaster to bring a domestic channel up to the standards of tomorrow's television, with picture clarity comparable to that experienced by the naked eye, and immersive true-to-life sound rendition. TV audiences will also be able to enjoy this cutting-edge viewing experience alongside France 2 and France 3's coverage of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games (which will also be broadcast in UHD on DTT).

Instantly available to FRANSAT subscribers

Regardless of signal quality or available bandwidth, the FRANSAT service delivers France 2 UHD to FRANSAT TV subscribers across mainland France using a free DTT UHD satellite dish and equipment.

To be eligible, FRANSAT viewers on individual reception must have a FRANSAT-compatible TV set with UHD-HDR 10 capability and the FRANSAT TV module to be inserted at the back of the TV screen. Over the next few months, the FRANSAT UHD-compatible product range will include new decoder models. For community free-to-air DTT reception via satellite with the FRANSAT PRO solution, assistance from an antenna installer is required to make sure that the new UHD signals are seamlessly integrated into the cable distribution system.

FRANSAT's ability to delivery this new UHD service as part of the expected move towards DTT modernisation confirms its role as a sustainable complement to terrestrial networks, securing nationwide access to free-to-air television.

Paris, 13 November 2023 - French public broadcaster, France Télévisions, has signed a multi-year contract with Eutelsat Communications (Euronext Paris, London Stock Exchange: ETL) to broadcast two 4K channels on both terrestrial and satellite networks. France 2 UHD, a full-time channel, and France 3 UHD, a part-time UHD channel dedicated to special events will be distributed via satellite to terrestrial transmitters across the French territory, as well as Direct-to-Home via the Fransat platform.

The channels will be broadcast via the EUTELSAT 5 West B satellite using the new DVB-SIS (Single Illumination System) transmission technology standard. This enables France Télévisions to use a single content source, combining distribution to both the terrestrial network backbone (DTT) and Direct-to-Home (DTH) reception via Fransat, the free-to-view satellite platform for French DTT channels. In preparation for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the service is scheduled to start by early 2024.

UHD or 4K offer viewers true immersion and an unprecedented viewing experience with an image quality four times richer than the current Full HD and two times more images per second. By incorporating satellite in their UHD distribution strategy, France Télévisions is ensuring that they can reach and serve all audiences with high-quality, reliable content delivery. Satellite has the available bandwidth and extensive reach, to provide extremely popular, premium quality content to all users across vast territories, as well as off-set terrestrial networks for a smooth, consistent viewing experience.

Jacques Donat-Bouillud, Head of Distribution for France Télévisions comments: With 4K standards, France Télévisions is delighted to be able to bring our France 2 and France 3 channels to our viewers with exceptional picture and sound quality. Eutelsat has provided us with an innovative and competitive solution for feeding terrestrial and satellite networks. Eutelsat's technical expertise and quality of services were decisive for us.

Laurence Delpy, General Manager of Eutelsat’s Video Business Unit, added: “We are honoured to have been chosen by France Télévisions for the first launch of a public UHD channel, and the first deployment of the DVB-SIS standard in France. By incorporating this mutualized approach in their distribution strategy, feeding both terrestrial and satellite networks from a single source, France Télévisions is efficiently ensuring that all viewers across the French territory can enjoy the 4K quality programmes, no matter where they are located.”
