Eutelsat and SRG SSR renew HOTBIRD partnership
  • · Further cementing 30-year partnership
  • · Assuring broadcast continuity of SSR SSG Group's High-Definition television channels and radio stations to audiences across Switzerland
  • · Showcasing the unparalleled coverage of the high-power HOTBIRD satellites at 13° East, one of the largest broadcasting systems across Europe and MENA

Paris, 1st July 2025 - Eutelsat Group (ISIN: FR0010221234 - Euronext Paris / London Stock Exchange: ETL) and Swiss broadcasting corporation SSR SRG are pleased to announce the multi-year renewal of their capacity agreement at Eutelsat’s leading HOTBIRD video neighbourhood, cementing a partnership spanning over 30 years.

This new multi-year agreement assures the broadcast continuity of SSR SSG Group's High-Definition television channels and radio stations to audiences across Switzerland who are living beyond the range of quality terrestrial reception. Channels available on HOTBIRD include RTS 1, RTS 2, SRF 1, SRF 2, SRF info, RSI La 1 and RSI La 2.

With their unparalleled pan-European coverage, the high-power HOTBIRD satellites at 13° East form one of the largest broadcasting systems across Europe and MENA. In Europe alone, they reach more than 130 million TV homes, with over 90% cable and IPTV penetration, making 13° East the leading DTH, cable, IP, and DTT provider across the region.

Satellite technology plays a vital role in Switzerland, by reducing the need for disruptive infrastructure projects—such as tunnelling through mountainous regions to lay fibre cables. Moreover, satellites provide a compelling solution for delivering content to remote and hard-to-reach communities across the country.

Aymeric Genty, President of Eutelsat’s Video Business Unit commented: “We are honoured that SRG SSR, Switzerland’s public broadcaster, is continuing to rely on Eutelsat to deliver its leading entertainment offering to millions of homes across Switzerland and further afield. This new agreement enables audiences to continue receiving their favourite channels, no matter how remote their location, and highlights the crucial role satellite continues to play in connecting communities and delivering essential services.”

Eutelsat and Orange sign multi-year LEO agreement
  • · FAST Channels wedotv movies, wedotv BIG stories, and wedotv sports Now Available Free-to-Air Across Europe via HOTBIRD
  • · Utilising HbbTV Technology to harmonise the broadcast and broadband delivery of entertainment services through connected TVs, set‐top boxes and multiscreen devices
  • · Expanded partnership highlights the continued importance of satellite distribution to reach wider audiences

Paris, June 9, 2025 – Eutelsat Group (ISIN: FR0010221234 - Euronext Paris / London Stock Exchange: ETL) and wedotv, the global ad-supported streaming TV network, have signed a new deal to include three of their free-to-air streaming channels on Eutelsat’s HOTBIRD satellites at 13° East. New German-language FAST channels, wedotv movies, wedotv BIG stories, and wedotv sports are now available to homes across Europe via HOTBIRD.

wedotv has been an early adopter of HbbTV (hybrid broadcast broadband TV) technology to facilitate the launch of its streaming channels on cable and satellite platforms. The company launched an Italian version of its wedotv movies channel on Eutelsat’s HOTBIRD fleet two years ago utilising this technology with great success. The high-power HOTBIRD satellites form one of the largest broadcasting systems across Europe and MENA thanks to their unique extensive coverage. In Europe alone, they reach more than 130 million TV homes, with over 90% cable and IPTV penetration.

Now with this deal, wedotv is significantly expanding its reach, and again, using HbbTV technology to enable dynamic ad insertion on all channels.

HbbTV has been making steady gains in Europe and recently reached a milestone of 100 million households, according to the HbbTV Association. By combining traditional broadcasting with broadband technology, HbbTV creates an interactive and user-friendly viewing experience, improving the way viewers connect with content.

“Eutelsat has been a great partner for us at wedotv. Not only are our channels accessible to consumers via the HOTBIRD satellites, but additionally every cable network or IPTV service in the region can downlink these free-to-air channels for their basic cable packages. Further, we are happy to announce that we found our first partner on the ground in Switzerland. Kabelio will add all three channels into their EPG on position 40, 41 and 42. This greatly expands consumers’ access to our channels across Europe while also enabling dynamic ad insertion thanks to HbbTV technology,” said Philipp Rotermund, wedotv co-CEO.

Aymeric Genty, President of the Eutelsat Video Business Unit added, “We are delighted to welcome these new FAST channels from wedotv to our flagship HOTBIRD video neighbourhood. Thanks to the extensive reach of our HOTBIRD satellites we are able to increase their distribution, bringing them to new audiences beyond terrestrial networks while being supported by advertising aligned with the FAST Industry.”

wedotv movies offers viewers a selection of top international and German-language films. wedotv BIG storiesis focused on nonfiction lifestyle and documentary content. wedotv sportsfeatures German live coverage of such sports events as German Sailing Bundesliga, SailGP, MotoGP, and Breeder’s Cup, as well as weekly highlights programs from football, Formula 1, e-sports and more.

Further expanding on the capabilities of HbbTV, wedotv’s full AVOD platform (wedotv.com) will be made available to users via “red button” access in the HOTBIRD app in the coming months.

Paris, 13 September 2024 — At IBC 2024, FRANSAT, the Eutelsat Group subsidiary operating a DTH platform of DTT channels for the French market, is premiering an exclusive miniature set-top box designed to further simplify satellite DTT Direct-to-Home reception. Showcased on the Eutelsat Group stand (Hall 1.C41), the new product will be available in France from the last quarter of 2024.

A significant breakthrough for satellite TV viewers

The FRANSAT TV Stick is a conditional access module (‘CAM module’) that uses the new CI Plus 2.0 standard to integrate the decrypting and logical channel numbering functionalities of satellite broadcasting, into a compact USB dongle.

The TV Stick is simply inserted into the USB port of new-generation TV sets equipped with an integrated satellite tuner. The viewer can then navigate the full range of satellite HD and UHD channels and control the TV's advanced features and services with the TV remote control, no external set-top box or additional cabling is required.

FRANSAT is the first global operator to propose this innovative solution, with the ambition to simplify and extend direct-to-home satellite TV reception.

A solution dedicated to the widespread use of Smart TVs

While over half of French homes are equipped with a Smart TV, a sizeable portion, particularly in low-density areas, has little or no terrestrial DTT coverage, or insufficient bandwidth to receive HD and UHD television channels over the Internet. For this reason, FRANSAT, which has been offering the TV Module - a CAM CI Plus module with PCMCIA port - for a number of years, is launching the TV Stick, featuring latest-generation security functions for access control and protection of UHD and premium content.

The small electronic device requires no external set-top box, enabling TV viewers to make the most of their smart TV's video and audio quality with built-in satellite HD and UHD reception, as well as their OTT services that require less Internet bandwidth. FRANSAT also proposes Fransat Connect, an interactive TV application integrating an enhanced electronic programme guide (EPG) service, based on the HbbTV (Hybrid Broadcast Broadband Television) interactive television technology standard, which is also available in all new-generation TV sets.

FRANSAT TV Stick

The TV Stick offers reduced energy consumption, using power from the television set without the need for an additional power source. Thanks to its compact size, it is also easy to recycle, in line with the current strategies of TV operators and manufacturers to reduce their carbon footprint.

Software development behind the TV Stick is the result of joint efforts between FRANSAT and TWISE, a French company developing embedded security software, and VIACCESS-ORCA, another French company specialising in video content technologies with a particular focus on access control.

The CI Plus 2.0 standard has already been integrated by a number of TV manufacturers, including HISENSE, LG and PHILIPS. Progressive roll-out of the standard is expected to take place in 2025, thus allowing a transition away from the old PCMCIA port interface.

With the launch of the TV Stick, FRANSAT is demonstrating its leadership in delivering innovative solutions for satellite TV reception to keep pace with the evolving expectations of both TV viewers and professionals across the industry.
